Under most if not all conditions, car rental companies in the United States have coverage on their vehicles, so you won't have to buy insurance to cover it when you travel.
Your own insurance may be better though, so you want to check deductibles and other factors in case you do have an accident.
If you rent through a credit card your credit card company may include coverage as well. Just check to see what's covered before making your final decision.
