The simple answer is if you have to ask you probably can't afford it. There are also a variety of different costs. There are the legal costs, emotional costs, settlement costs and continuing costs going forward if child support or alimony is involved.
Typically though, people will concentrate on the legal costs. If there are no children limited assets and the desire to divorce is mutual and civil, a divorce can be accomplished for hundreds of dollars. If on the other hand it is a bitter and contested divorce with custody issues and many assets, it can be a long drawn out procedure and cost in the tens of thousands of dollars.
The old saying is that once an attorney gets involved, their goal is to cause as much friction as possible, because friction equals time and time equals billable hours.
