For those without a lot of understanding of the stock market and how to research or analyze companies, the best way to get started (without using a broker of financial advisor), would be to invest through an index of some sort. Probably the safest and best for beginners is the S&P 500, which tracks most of the larger companies in America, which represent a good cross-section of the economy. If you're not comfortable with that, just contact a broker and have them walk you through it, as they can give suggestions according to your risk-tolerance. Just be sure to let them know what level of risk you want to operate under and be sure they operate within those parameters.
