To probate a will means to bring a signed, valid and legal will to the court for official filing. Doing this renders the will official and the document that will be employed upon the death of the subject of the will. This is not the typical use of the word 'probate' Normally probate is a noun, referring to the entire process of writing a will, signing it, filing it, etc. This process ensures that the assets of the subject of the will are managed as they prefer after their passing. State laws normally provide backup procedures for distribution of assets where no will exists.
