The NASDAQ is an American stock exchange. Currently (2009) about 3,700 companies and corporations are listed on the NASDAQ. The NASDAQ has two main indices: the Nasdaq Composite (often referred to as just 'the Nasdaq'), and the NASDAQ-100. The Composite is an index of all the common stocks traded on the bourse, while the 100 is an index of just the 100 largest non-financial stocks (rebalanced once per year). Both indices are represented by a single number (currently [Nov 2009] 2168.76 for the Composite and 1785.57 for the 100). A fall in this number indicates an overall fall in the prices of the stocks included in the index, and a rise indicates the opposite. Both indices are capitalization-weighted, meaning that the larger a company is by market capitalization, the more effect it has on the index when its shares change in price.
