Homeowners insurance in the U.S. is required if you have a mortgage on a home; at least by the majority of lenders out there. It's not a legal requirement in general, although it's possible certain states could have differing laws. So if you have a mortgage on your home, you can almost count on having to get homeowners insurance, although be sure to choose the lowest priced one you can, as there are huge swings it what it costs for the same coverage from company to company.
