The main advantage of investing in common stocks is the long-term growth that they provide. Common stock is one of only two asset classes that has historically outpaced inflation over time (the other being real estate.) It can also provide substantial short-term gains in some instances. Therefore investors who need long-term growth in their portfolios look to stocks as a means of achieving this.
