As of November 2009, EverBank seems to offer the highest interest rate. While it is introductory, they are offering 2.51% interest rate on checking accounts. Next, CapitalOne at 1.7%, and DollarSavingsDirect come in second place at 1.6%/. After that, Ally Bank at 1.5% and HSBC at 1.35%. Then, ING at 1.3%, Imperial at .96, BOA at .10. Clearly, savings and checking accounts are not the place for high yield returns. However, savings accounts are safe, insured places to store savings. Shop around for the bank you prefer; the interest rates listed here are liable to change. Many banks are now offering online-only banking, which is a great way to take advantage of the best interest rate without being limited geographically. Also, remember that you can move your money from bank to bank, or split money between banks, without much effort. This is another way to take advantage of variances in interest rates.
