Most banks sell treasury, or US Savings, bonds. Besides local banks and credit unions, you can buy bonds straight from the government at http://www.treasurydirect.gov/ . Additionally, banks join the government in selling bonds online as well. US Savings bonds are a valuable "risk free" asset. Caveat: no investment vehicle is totally risk free, but treasury bonds are generally referred to as risk free because they have never defaulted. You can buy treasury bonds for a range of timeframes- short term, mid or long term. Despite their term, treasuries are very liquid assets and there is a constant market for them, so they are generally redeemable whenever you need them in cash.
