Insurance companies provide products where they pool the money of a large number of people together in order to pay for a variety of circumstances which could otherwise be impossible to financially handle. For example, health care, car accidents, business insurance, renters insurance, and many other types of insurance you may need. In a sense, the insurance company is an aggregator of funds to apply toward individually needs arising from the circumstances of life.
