Financial statements tell an investor how a company is performing. They show the difference between operating income, which is how a company is making money through business activities, and assets, things the company possesses that are worth money, and liabilities, money the company owes. Examining a financial statement tells you if a company is making money on what it does, if it losing money on its activities, or if other things, like exceptional payments or special charges are costing the company money. Using financial statements, you can compare one company with another.
