A mutual fund is one which invests in a variety of companies, bonds and cash (money market funds) in order to spread the risk for the investor. There are now more types of mutual funds than can be counted, but they will always focus on a particular strategy an investor is looking for. Some are funds that invest in certain types of bonds, while others will focus on emerging markets or a certain sector. Mutual funds are put together with an individuals specific goals in mind, while taking into account their particular risk tolerance; no different than a financial adviser would do for a client.
