AMEX is short for American Stock Exchange. They are an exchange traditionally used by companies that are too small to be listed on the NYSE. The minimum market value of public shares required to be listed with AMEX is 3 million as opposed to 100 million with the NYSE. While there are only around 1000 stocks listed with them, they deal heavily in options and bond trading as well. Due to the nature of it's origins when traders would get together on street corners to deal, the AMEX is sometimes called the "curb exchange."
