An index fund refers to a mutual fund that tracks a specific equity index. An equity index is an group of stocks that are grouped together like the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The index fund, buys the stocks in the index in an effort to track the daily movements of the index. An investor in an index fund should expect to receive a return equal to the returns of the index the fund is tracking.
