In the world of finance crude oil is used to denote the petroleum that is obtained by drilling and usually refined into gasoline. Since the entire world depends on gasoline, and therefor crude oil, to function, it is a very actively traded market for both speculators and hedgers. Crude oil is traded on the NYMEX as a future under the symbol "CL".
