FINRA is an acronym for Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the largest private agency governing securities in the U.S. FINRA is relatively new (2007) spin off of the various offices regulating national exchanges. FINRA is not a governmental agency, though it executes administrative functions. It is better characterized as the financial industry's effort at regulating itself, and was created by combining the internal regulatory units of the NASD (National Association of Securities Dealers) and the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). FINRA makes and enforces rules;, specifies certification standards for dealing with various levels of securities and oversees all US brokers and firms.
