There are various Nasdaq indices that track different sectors of the economy. Two examples of the major indices used are Nasdaq Composite (ticker IXIC) and the Nasdaq Global Market Composite (Ticker NQGM). The Nasdaq Composite currently has 2,806 securities listed in it and will include large companies such as 800 flowers and Alliance Financial Corporation. Various indices though, are used as a tool for finding out how a particular sector is doing by investors. An investor with an appetite for investing in Biotechnology might be interested in the Nasdaq OMX Global Biotechnology Index (Ticker QGBI) for this segment of their portfolio as opposed to just looking at the broader indices so they can see how the stocks they have invested in are performing relative to their peers.

The NASDAQ index, known as the NASDAQ-100 (TICKER: NDX) is a market cap weighted index of 100 stocks. These stocks represent many industries including transportation, biotech, communication, technology, and industrial. However the most weight is given to technology stocks. It does not include stocks of the financial sector.
Because of the weight given to tech stocks in this index, it is often considered the benchmark index for tracking the whole technology sector.
