Private equity investments are investments made by individual investors or funds which aren't listed on a stock exchange. The investment capital can be used for investment directly into a private company, or in some cases of pooled private capital, can be used to buy a public company and then take them private. Privat equity investors normally have a somewhat long-term view of what company they're going to invest in, and are committed to hanging on to the company until they turn it around so it can be sold, or initiate an IPO to get a return on their investment that way.
