Property tax abatement is when a property owner attempt to reduce the amount of taxes they owe based on the assessment made by a government official. This applies whether it's commerical or residential. For residential, you usually are assessed higher taxes when you make home improvements or when the general market prices of your home rise. Abatements result from either appealing the price of your home the tax increases are based upon, or appealing from a possible financial hardship coming from the higher taxes, which may not be able to be afforded. In some cases the taxes are abated to prior levels, but most cases they're reduced some in response to challenges.
