The average credit card interest rate is taken from a representative group of national credit cards and added up and divided by the number of companies represented to determine the national average credit card interest rate. While somewhat helpful, the differences between credit cards interest rates are so great, based on a number of factors, that it's really only a general snapshot of the credit card industry, and not a great indicator of what's actually happening within it.
