The current United States Federal Reserve overnight lending rate is between 0 and .25 basis points as of the November 4th, 2009 meeting. The rate is very low due to the state of the US economy at this point in the business cycle. Although, the fed rate can not go lower than zero, it can continue to stimulate through measured “quantitative easing” (creating money) and maintaining the rate at zero. Effectively, the idea is that banks can borrow now and pay back at zero percent with cheaper money in the future.
