ABN stands for 'Australian Business Number'. Entities that do business in Australia can apply for ABNs, and they are assigned by the Australian Tax Office (ATO). ABNs are primarily used to identify businesses for the purposes of the collection and remittance of Australia's consumption tax, the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

ACN stands for 'Australian Company Number'. ACNs are assigned to companies incorporated in Australia on registration by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). Their purpose is to ensure that it is sufficiently clear to others which company they are dealing with.

ABNs and ACNs are both issued by government bodies, but they are different identifying numbers and they serve different purposes. While businesses are not required to apply for an ABN, ACNs are issued to companies automatically and must be displayed on certain documents. Note also that when a company applies for an ABN, the number they are given is the same as their ACN plus a two-digit prefix.
