The current market capitalization of the S & P 500 as of November 6, 2009 is approximately 9.4 trillion dollars. Daily details in millions can be found at the referenced link below. The market capitalizations of all the companies included in the index are used on a weighted basis to derive the total. This ensures that when there are changes in the prices of the stocks small companies will not have a disproportionate affect on change in the Index compared to larger companies.
