Yen is the currency of Japan, and has for years been the preferred currency to make carry trades with, which is using the low-interest rate currency to buy better-yielding investments. The yen has recently been replaced in the carry trade by the U.S. dollar because of its low interest rates, which makes it the cheapest currency to work with for making money on other investments.
