The Russell 2000 Index is a list of 2000 small cap companies in the United States. The Index is considered a sub index of the broader Russell 3000 index. The Russell 2000 represents approximately eight percent of the total market capitalization of the broader Russell 3000 index which includes the Russell 1000 Index that is focused on large capitalization. The small cap sector is considered an aggressive and volatile investment sector and should be reviewed carefully with your financial advisor. Many money managers in the small cap sector will use the Russell 2000 as a benchmark for their portfolios as well. The top ten holdings as of November 6, 2009 are: Human Genome Sciences, Perot Systems Corp Tupperware Corp, Palm, Polycom, MFA Mortgage Investments, Highwood Properties, Skyworks Solutions, Solera Holdings & Bally Technologies.
