The first step in buying a house is finding a Realtor. The best way to do this is talk to friends and family to see if they can recommend anyone. Next step is to interview the Realtor. If you want to hire them remember they work for you and you should both agree on what to expect in the house search process. No matter how good the Realtor the final decision is yours and you will literally live with it. So, do not be shy about asking questions and make sure you understand the answers. The kinds of questions you want to ask include how old is the house, how many people have owned the house, why is it being sold, what improvements have been made in the home, were any improvements properly permitted, and so forth. Every home is different so take a good, close look inside and outside of any home you are serious about. Also, you may want to consider a home warranty as additional protection but be sure to check out the warranty company for any compliants.
