Allocate your 401k investment choices for long-term growth if you have at least 10 years to invest. Start to allocate them toward more conservative choices as you get nearer to retirement. By the time you retire, your 401k choices should probably be about half in conservative choices and half in growth instruments, such as stock funds. You should always have some money in equities to combat the effects of inflation.
