The short answer to this question is that if you don't know what your ABN is, you probably don't have one yet. ABN stands for 'Australian Business Number', and they are unique 11-digit numbers assigned by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Their purpose is to identify businesses to each other and to the government. They are also necessary in order to register for the Goods and Service Tax (GST), which is compulsory for any business with an annual turnover of $75,000 or more (2009 figures). Applying for an ABN is straightforward through the Australia Business Register website (http://www.abr.business.gov.au).
