Then why has the public just been hearing about it over the past few years? Why didn't it effect us in 1964 for example?

John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil started selling certificates against the oil they had creating the first oil futures market. In 1882, the National Petroleum Exchange was opened, officially making oil a traded commodity.
