Knowing when to hire an accountant is going to vary from person to person. The same rules also apply to hiring any employee. When managing your bills, payments, reciepts, etc., take over your time that was spent actually doing your business; it may be time to hire an accountant. Sometimes the need is temporary and if that's the case, try to do it that way. Hiring an employee will bring a whole new set of rules and taxes to your business that you may not be prepared for. For many businesses, programs like Quicken may be all you need. If that's the case, putting your spouse or family member in charge of accounting can be a good alternative.
