The best time to start a 401(K) is as soon as you qualify for it. There is probably no better financial vehicle to prepare for you retirement than this, and time is an important factor in building it up to the goals you desire. It's also best to contribute the maximum amount you're able to in order to build a solid foundation as soon as possible.
