The IRS will not accept tax returns January 1 2010 for tax year 2009. The projected date so far is January 15, 2010 as of right now. This date may change so keep checking with the IRS.

The first day the IRS will accept transmissions for E-File by anyone will be January 16, 2009. Therefore, filing earlier than January 16th will not get you a faster refund since we cannot send it to the IRS before January 16th.

The IRS will not begin accepting 2009 income tax returns until January 1, 2010. It will accept them from that point on, but you can never submit a tax return for a given year until that year has ended. The same rule applies for fiscal years.
