One of the best places to go for free public information on a property is the county's website. That site ill contain public records related to that property. You will find a chain of ownership, as well has prices paid for the property and what dates the ownership was transfered. There will also be tax assessor information which will tell you how much the properties taxes are per year as well as it's tax assessed value. It's important to keep in mind that the tax assessed value may or may not be close to the actually value. I've seen them as low as 1/5th of the actual appraised value. This website will also give you information on the properties zoning, which can be very important if you plan to develop the property. If it's in city limits, often you have to go through a long process to change the zoning, including a city council meeting and vote. There will also be a map of the property showing its boundaries and the exact size of the property.
