The money doesn't go anywhere when a stock goes down unless you sell it. If you continue to hold the stock, the price will usually rebound, and you regain whatever you may have temporarily lost per share. If you sell it, you lose the money and take a loss on your investment. That's why it's better to be a long-term investor than a short-term investor. As long as you hold strong companies with proven records, over the long haul you enjoy solid gains.
