There are two kinds of options, and each trades in a different way. Exchange-traded options are traded through clearinghouses, much like stock exchanges. One such is the Options Clearing Corp (http://www.optionsclearing.com), or, in Europe, the LIFFE exchange. Options contracts on these exchanges are standardized. Over-the-counter options are traded between any two parties who wish to trade them, although it is wise to work with a financial services institution that can back its trades. But any contract of any kind may be traded over-the-counter.
