Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) Latest Airline Charging for Meals

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Desperate for ways to cut costs and generate revenue, airlines around the world have been changing the practice of offering free meals on their flights, with the latest airline to begin charging for meals being Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL).

The changes will affect customers on North American flights and some targeted flights to Latin America. Exceptions to the new meal policy include all intercontinental flights, domestic flights lasting over 6 hours, and some unspecified international routes.

None of these changes will have an effect on those traveling first class and BusinessFirst, as the meals there will remain complimentary, although there will be additional options introduced to first-class travelers as of April 1.

Snack type of offerings and drinks without alcohol will continue be be included free on all flights Continental offers.

Continental executive vice president and chief marketing officer said while market conditions are reflected in the changes, there are also "customer preferences" included in making the decision.

Meal changes will be introduced at an unspecified date sometime in the latter part of 2010, where a menu of a variety of choices will be provided for customers of Continental Airlines at that time.
