Larger businesses will have a human resources department to control all things related to their employees lives: insurance, hiring, firing, benefits and the like. This is not only for the benefit of the employee but also to protect the employer from lawsuits and unhappy employees. This department is responsible for handling these sensitive areas of an employee's life to the letter of the law and also to make sure that the employee is reasonably happy with the compensation, benefits and procedures of the company.
