In commodity market terminology, Cocoa is a “soft commodity” like coffee and sugar which is grown and not mined or drilled as metals and oil. Cocoa refers to a brown powder that is made from ground roasted cacao beans which have had most of the fat removed and which are obtained from the Theobroma cacao or cocoa tree.

Cocoa is primarily grown in Central and South America, West Africa and Asia. The eight largest producers responsible for 90% of the worlds cocoa production are: Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Brazil, Ecuador and Malaysia.
