What are Central Banks?

Central banks, banks that act in the interests of their respective governments, make up the majority of the foreign currency exchange markets. They largely try to balance their country's exposure to any foreign country's currency by buying and selling in this currency exchange market. They may be trying to offset trade deficits, outstanding foreign debt or some current event. Their ultimate goal is to be healthy enough to support other banks.

Examples of a central bank include the Federal Reserve in the US and the European Central Bank (ECB) in the European Union.
