Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) was launched in 1963 as a single-system cable operation when Ralph J. Roberts, Daniel Aaron and Julian A. Brodsky acquired a 1,200-subscriber cable system which they named American Cable Systems, in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Today they're the largest provider of cable services in the United States, with close to 24.6 million cable customers, an additional 16.3 million digital cable customer and another 14.4 million high-speed Web customers. Their voice customer base is growing as well, now standing at about 5.6 million.
Some of their many acquisitions include Lenfest Communications, Inc., Home Team Sports, Outdoor Life Network, , Susquehanna Communications and Fandango. They also merged with AT&T Broadband.
Most recently Comcast made a blockbuster acquisition of 51 percent share in NBC Universal, which will make Comcast one of the largest media companies in the world.
Comcast made its first public stock offering in 1972, being listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
Headquarters is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
