DuPont (NYSE: DD) was started in 1802 by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont as a gunpower business. He went back to France after fleeing the country because of the French Revolution in 1801 to raise capital to launch the company, and also to secure equipment used to make gun powder. He never returned to France again once he left.

Today, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company or DuPont, operates in a number of market sectors through six business segments: Agriculture & Nutrition, Coatings & Color Technologies, Electronic & Communication Technologies, Performance Materials, Safety & Protection and Pharmaceuticals.

The company has a presence in North America, Latin America, Europe and the Asia Pacific.

They recently acquired businesses related to cotton seed in India, including Nandi Seeds and Nagarjuna Seeds.

DuPont is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware.
