General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) has roots going all the way back to 1896 when John Philip Holland developed the first submarines for the U.S. Nave via his Holland Torped Boat Company.
Eventually the company was formed in 1952 through the merger of a number of companies, including Electric Boat Company and Canadair Ltd.
They operate through four business sectors: Aerospace, Combat Systems, Marine Systems, and Information Systems and Technology, marketing products for business aviation, shipbuilding design and construction, IT systems, combat vehicles and munitions.
Recent acquisitions include AxleTech International, Jet Aviation, ViPS, Inc. and Axsys Technologies, Inc.
The company serves markets in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East with both commercial and government defense products.
General Dynamics is based in Falls Church, Virginia.
