HIG - Hartford Financial
Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. (NYSE: HIG) or what is now simply called, "The Hartford," was started in 1810 by a group of businessmen. The Connecticut General Assembly passed an act allowing the company to incorporate. The name of the new corporation was Hartford Fire Insurance Company.
Now the company provides insurance in most areas, and operates through six business segments: Retail Products Group, Retirement Plans, International and Institutional Solutions Group, Individual Life, Group Benefits, and International. Through those divisions they offer life, property and casualty insurance.
A couple or important acquisitions by the company include Federal Trust Corporation and the group benefits division of CNA Financial.
Along with the United States, the company also has offices in Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan.
