Humana Inc. (NYSE:HUM was founded in 1961 by David A. Jones, Sr. and Wendell Cherry as Extendicare, a nursing home company. Ultimately they became the largest nursing home company in America.
They sold the chain of nursing homes and went into the much more lucrative business of acquiring hospitals in 1972, wherein they soon became the largest hospital company in the world. Now they're primarily a health insurance company

Humana has acquired over the last several years CarePlus Health, Corphealth Behavioral Healthcare, CHA Health, Compbenefits, KMG, OSF Healthplans, Metcare and Cariten.
