IBM - IBM

When you think of International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE:IBM), the name Thomas Watson comes immediately to mind, and many people assume he was the founder of IBM, when in reality, the somewhat obscure founder was named Herman Hollerith, where in 1896 he launched Tabulating Machine Company. The company was incorporated later, which causes some confusion when people cite the date IBM was founded.

The company was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1916, and the name International Business Machines was adopted in 1917. It wasn't until 1924 when it was finally taken over by Thomas Watson.

Similar to many of its competitors, IBM had focused on computer sales until it became a commodity business, and then it gravitated its core business to computers software, consulting and IT service management.

Core businesses operate under its Global Business Services, Systems and Technology, Software and Global Financing divisions.

IBM has acquired an extraordinary number of companies through its history, including dozens over the last decade. In 2009 alone they bought Outblaze E-Mail Service, Exero, SPSS Inc., Ounce Labs, RedPill Solutions, Guardium and Lombardi.

Headquarters for IBM is in Armonk, New York.
