International Paper (NYSE: IP) was founded in the early part of 1898 when a group of 18 companies, including pulp and paper mills, merged to create the newly branded company.

The company has operations in most parts of the world, including North America, Latin America, Europe, the Russian Federation, Asia, and north Africa.

There are six primary businesses the company engages in: Printing Papers, Industrial Packaging, Consumer Packaging, Distribution, Forest Products, and Specialty Businesses and Other.

One of the more important recent acquisitions of the company was the Weyerhaeuser Company’s "Containerboard, Packaging and Recycling (CBPR) business" for $6 billion cash.

The company has sold a number of its businesses over the last decade in order to focus on its core paper and paper products business.
