Normally an IRS audit is triggered when you use questionable deductions. Anything unusual or too creative will generate a potential audit, but even being in a higher tax bracket can get you flagged. In general, if you overdo your deductions you'll attract their attention, or if you try to experiment with things you're not entirely sure are deductible to see if they accept it.
