Distressed securites investing is mainly done by Hedge Funds and private equity groups due to the size of the purchases involved. A distressed security is a company that is going into or coming out of a financial crisis; usually bankruptcy. The investor hopes to capitalize on the depressed asset pricing and turn the company around for a profit.
