In a bear market, the best investing is to be conservative. For stocks, for instance, find companies that are not cyclical, low debt, a lot of cash, the ability to raise fund in adverse time, low multiples (e.g. low price-to-earnings ratio) and/or large discount relative to its book value. Some examples include consumer staples (Procter and Gamble, Kroger), pharmaceuticals (Merck), low-end retailers (Walmart, Family Dollar, Mcdonald), used cars or related sectors(Autozone, Oreily).
