If it is necessary to stay in Manhattan during a visit, there are some alternatives to the crazy expensive hotels that travelers hear about. They are similar to those available in most cities, but that are not always that well advertised.

One place is to seek out owners of apartments who may be looking to either swap with you taking your home in your city, or who may be going out of town at that time and take in visitors to supplement income. There are apartment buildings that have been converted to hotels, and there are hostels as well as B&B's. There are of course cheaper hotels, but depending on price and location the traveler might not like the type of clientele it caters to.

When the question says New York and not specifically Manhattan, if the flexibility exists to go to one of the other boroughs a great deal of money can be saved, and Manhattan would be a subway ride away. Any way you cut it, New York is an expensive town, but options do exist.

The best place to stay in New York on a budget is well.....New Jersey! Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, and Edgewater, are examples of Hudson riverfront cities with easy and quick access to Manhattan. Jersey City has a subway system that brings you into Manhattan anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes depending on what part of Jersey City you live. Jersey City also has a ferry that takes you across the Hudson river into downtown or central Manhattan in ten minutes. Hoboken, like Jersey City, has a ferry service and the PATH train system. Weehawken is a beautiful town with the best views of Manhattan you can find. From Weehawken there are buses everywhere that take you right across the Hudson river into Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel. Edgewater also has a ferry system. All these riverfront New Jersey cities are much more affordable than Manhattan. The rents there are much lower and access to Manhattan is easy. As long as you can withstand the New Jersey jokes, you can be happy there.
